Water, Sanitation, Hygiene – WASH
The Strategic Framework for WASH Climate Resilient Development is being applied to ensure that water and sanitation projects under the AIP are designed to be climate resilient. The Strategic Framework was jointly developed by Global Water Partnership and The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 2017, in a response to growing demands from governments, development partners and WASH practitioners.
The Strategic Framework looks to provide sustainable WASH service delivery both now and into the future by strengthening the climate resilience of WASH systems, and on investments to manage current and long-term climate variability. Additional tools have been developed to support the implementation of the framework, mobilising finance for climate resilient WASH projects, and monitoring and advancing the WASH climate resilience agenda.
The Framework is particularly relevant to those working with WASH service provision in areas vulnerable to climate hazards and variability. UNICEF and GWP are continuing the collaboration with further knowledge development, capacity building and implementation of the Strategic Framework.
WASH professionals in 79 countries have been trained, with 49 countries already implementing the framework. In 2020, GWP, UNICEF, and Cap-Net collaborated on an online course that covers all areas of the Framework for WASH Climate Resilience.

Approach
.The AIP Water Investment Scorecard will track priority water related investments indicators and assist senior leaders to improve accountability, monitoring, and response to the water investments gaps.
The AIP Water Investment Scorecard will track country progress according to thematic indicators that will be identified through a consultative process with the key partners. Each theme will include categorized qualitative and quantitative indicators that will simplify relevant information, allowing for the identification of important trends and phenomena to be communicated to decision-makers. This will assist in understanding the gaps and areas of concern to address the lag in water investments in Africa.
The scorecard will be disseminated to decision makers on a regular basis along with a country specific reports, and presented to the African Heads of States on a regular basis to mobilise the highest level of political commitment and financing for water investments
