Climate Information & Early Warning Systems to inform Climate Resilient Infrastructure Investments in Southern Africa
UNFCCC COP29, Baku, Azerbaijan
11:30-13:00, Tuesday, 19 November 2024
South Africa Pavilion, Blue Zone
The event will introduce the Climate Resilient Systems for the SADC Water Sector that will build the resilience of the entire SADC region by facilitating a paradigm shift towards investments in scarce water resources informed by high-quality climate information and early warning systems (CIEWS) and using innovative financing approaches for climate resilience. This programme is aligned with the AIP and aims to advance the implementation of the AIP within the SADC region.
The event will explore financing mechanisms and the type of investments required to restore and install appropriate CIEWS and hydrological infrastructure as a foundation for science-led investment decision-making for sustainability.
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is providing an initial project preparation grant of US$1.5 million, through the GCF Project Preparation Facility (PPF), for the SADC AIP. The programme is implemented by the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and the SADC Secretariat, in collaboration with Global Water Partnership Southern Africa, and it aims to leverage at least USD 117 million and is expected to benefit 140 million people in the SADC region.
