Overview on Climate Resilience Efforts

Ghana’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) outline 19 policy actions across 10 priority areas, resulting in 13 climate adaptation and 34 mitigation measures. These measures are aligned with national development objectives, including the 2022–2025 Medium-Term Development Policy Framework. Water is a recurring theme in many of the adaptation measures in the updated NDC.

Beyond the NDCs, Ghana has formulated a National Climate Change Policy, which represents a comprehensive and integrated response to climate change, consistent with the country’s sustainable development goals.

In parallel, the National Water Policy focuses on the sustainable development, management, and use of water resources. It aims to enhance health, livelihoods, and governance while reducing vulnerability for both current and future generations. The policy is structured into three sections:

  1. The state of water resources, institutional frameworks, and international obligations;
  2. Key policy issues and water management challenges;
  3. Implementation proposals and guidelines.

Gender Dimensions of Climate Change

In Guinea, gender-based vulnerabilities are significant. Women are frequently excluded from decision-making processes related to climate adaptation. Social practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage—driven by cultural norms—limit women’s opportunities for education and active participation in climate response efforts. These inequalities increase women’s vulnerability to climate change impacts.
