Republic Of Congo (Brazzaville)

Overview on Climate Resilience Efforts

The Republic of Congo submitted its revised NDC in 2021, highlighting adaptation priorities across multiple sectors, including water. Key needs identified include the nomination of Direct Access Entities (DAEs), capacity building for climate finance programming in the water sector, and progress in advancing the GCF pipeline towards the Concept Note stage.

Gender Dimensions of Climate Change

With a population of over four million, Congo-Brazzaville has a low population density of about 13 inhabitants per km². According to World Bank data, the labour force participation rate is 62.8% for women and 83.5% for men. Global warming has adversely affected key sectors like farming and fishing—areas where women are predominantly active.

A survey of residents in flood-affected areas of Brazzaville—78% of whom were women and girls—revealed a lack of adequate drinking water in terms of both quality and quantity. Women are responsible for household water supply, often walking long distances with heavy loads. As women are more likely to live in poverty, they are also more vulnerable to the impacts of droughts and floods, especially in isolated or overcrowded urban areas.
