Overview on Climate Resilience Efforts

Tunisia submitted its updated NDC in October 2021 and is preparing its NAPs for agriculture and land use planning with GCF support. The 1975 Water Code forms the basis of water governance, while the Eau 2050 Water Strategy integrates climate change into water resource and demand management.

The NDC’s water adaptation goal is to ensure sufficient, reliable, and high-quality water supply by 2030 through three pillars:

  • Improve management of conventional water resources under climate change.
  • Scale up the use of non-conventional water sources to address scarcity.
  • Strengthen capacities of water stakeholders to support climate adaptation.

Tunisia seeks support for existing nominated Direct Access Entities (DAEs) and to enhance capacity among water sector stakeholders in climate finance programming. The country also aims to expand its water-related investment pipeline.

Gender Dimensions of Climate Change

Despite high female graduation rates (57%), women face double the unemployment rate of men (24.1% vs. 15.9%). In rural areas, limited land ownership restricts women’s access to finance and economic empowerment.

Women’s contributions to climate resilience are under recognised. This programme will support the development of a gender strategy for private sector participation, aligned with CDC’s climate programming as a candidate for GCF accreditation.
